Every wall is a door.
This site-specific project for the Bologna city centre has its origin in an interpretation of the concept of boundaries, boundaries that separate interior and exterior, reality and imagination. Walls are boundaries constructed with the purpose to separate, challenging us to surmount them. As the American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson put it: “Every wall is a door.”

The project derives from the vision to close all the characteristic arches of the famous Bolognese porticoes with an ephemeral wall, intangible and fluid. Water is a very important element for the town of Bologna and in this case it is used like a curtain, separating interior from exterior. This installation is designed as an immersive experience for the spectator who finds himself confronted with continuous cascades that close the porticoes and challenge him to surmount them.
At night, the wall made of water is animated with video projections that show people attempting to destroy it. These scintillating and almost imperceptive images depict man’s will to break free and overcome barriers imposed on him.
The project is extendable and versatile and may be installed in any chosen portico of Bologna without drilling or any other modification of preexisting architecture. The cascade of every single arch is created by a motor transporting the water to a lightweight metal construction. Its form can be adapted to width and height of the arch. Sprayed by nozzles on top of the arched structure, a basin on floor level collects the falling water and feeds the cycle.

Il progetto site specific per la città di Bologna nasce dall’interpretazione del concetto di confine tra dentro e fuori e tra realtà e immaginazione. Il muro è un confine che divide ma nello stesso tempo contiene al suo interno l’idea di sfida per superarlo, come scriveva il filosofo americano Ralph Waldo Emerson: Every wall is a door .
L’idea nasce da una visione, quella di chiudere tutte le caratteristiche arcate dei portici di Bologna attraverso un muro effimero, inafferrabile e di materia fluida. L’acqua è un elemento molto importante per la città di Bologna ed in questo caso viene utilizzata come separazione verticale tra dentro e fuori. L’installazione è pensata come un esperienza immersiva e totale da parte dello spettatore che si trova al cospetto di sottili e continue cascate di acqua a chiusura dei portici e anche al cospetto della sfida per oltrepassarle.
Nelle ore notturne il muro d’acqua ospita video proiezioni di uomini intenti a distruggere un muro, queste proiezioni sull’acqua, tremolanti e quasi impercettibili, rappresentano la volontà dell’uomo di liberarsi e superare la barriera imposta.
L’installazione è versatile e può essere installata in ogni porticato di Bologna senza forare o modificare l’esistente. Le cascate sono generate da un motore per ogni arcata che spinge l’acqua dentro una struttura leggera in metallo della stessa forma dell’arco che la ospita. L’acqua a pressione esce dai fori e viene riciclata da una vasca posta a pavimento per avere un ciclo continuo.
